  1. Hi Norma,
Thanks for the entry on this family’s history. I’m curious about the part of Jane French’s description that says she was born “across from Lachine.” I notice this phrase was in quotation marks, and I was wondering if there was an original source for it. I’ve been researching Jane and I’d be very curious to know more.
    Cheers,
    Alex

  2. Hi Alex,
The inverted commas signals that it was a description by someone I read somewhere online, but that they did not give any source — that’s just my way of reminding myself that maybe this could be looked into because someone somewhere mentioned it. When I’m quoting an actual source I use the double quotation marks “”.

  3. Hello. I have been looking into this issue for some time. Alfred Dease, a family chronicler, insists Jane was “Scottish or French” and not indigenous. Having reached a dead-end on this issue I ventured an hypothesis. I learned that the Kanawake were prolific in their taking outsiders into their communities. They adopted individuals from settler and indigenous populations in surrounding areas. They also raided communities on occassion. My hypothesis was that perhaps Jane was an adoptee arising out of such a raid. Some evidence of this possiblity emerged, since there was a raid on Deerfield Mass. in 1704, some 50 years before Jane was born. Individuals from a family with the last name “French” were indeed taken hostage! Three girls were among them. Two eventually married Montrealers. I could not find Jane amongst their descendents. The youngest, Abigail French, remained at Kanawake. However, the literature claims she never married. It is at least possible that Jane is related in some way to these individuals, or alternatively, that she was named “French” having European ancestry but living amongst the Mohawks there, out of respect for her ancestry. What do you think?
