POITRAS

 André Henri Poitras and an unidentified Nakoda woman, Red River Settlers beginning c. 1823

1. POITRAS, André Henri. Born 10 February 1751/ 1757/ 1760/ 1763, Ste. Foy, Quebec, to Michel POITRAS (Born Quebec) and Marguerite ARNOUL/ HENAULT/ HARNOIS de/ dit VILLENEUVE (Born Quebec); began North West Company career 1793 Fort Espérance [SK];  1st married c. 1793; 2d married 1802 Fort Esperance [SK]; at Qu’Appelle [SK] 1804; ‘Freeman’ 1818; 1st marriage formalized 1823 St. Boniface, Red River; settled at Grantown, White Horse Plains, Red River c. 1823/ 1824;  died c. 1830/ 1831 St. Joseph, Pembina, Dakota Territory.

Some genealogies show Andre Henri POITRAS married to Marguerite ARNOUL/ HENAULT/ HARNOIS with a son, also named André Poitras, being married to Marguerite GRANT. Both father and son are described as fur traders who “show up in fur trade records as being situated at fur trade posts on the upper Assiniboine River in the 1790s and early 1800s respectively.” [See for example, Canada Tree 2, no. 3 (February 1995), online.] The children of the father and son might, therefore, be conflated in the list below (which would explain some of the wild contradictions in dates—there might be grandchildren here that are listed as siblings of their aunts or uncles, or who are listed as the same person as an aunt or uncle). All comments leading to resolving issues of mistaken identity are welcome.

– sp. GRANT, Marguerite. Possibly born to Cuthbert GRANT Sr. (of Scotland) and an unidentified Nakoda-Cree woman (misidentified online as ‘Utiniwasis’— a recently coined name); married 1802; apparently died c. 9 April 1866; buried 10 April 1866 St. Boniface, Red River.

There is uncertainty about the birth date of the 2d wife of André Henri POITRAS—she is easily confused with a cousin, Marguerite GRANT who was the daughter of one of Cuthbert GRANT Sr.’s brothers, and, some genealogies assume POITRAS’ wife was actually Cuthbert GRANT Sr.’s widow (born 1775). Other genealogies list her as Cuthbert GRANT Jr.’s sister, born c. 1790. If Marguerite GRANT-POITRAS was one of the younger women of the GRANT name, she may have been born  c. 1783, 1785, 1789, 1790, or 1793;  There is additional confusion surrounding the marriages of all these Marguerite GRANTs:

  • someone among them married Paul PAUL, or, Francois PAUL. [Marguerite, a daughter of Peter GRANT?];
  • one of them married Michel MONETTE BELHUMUER (born 15 April 1766, Ste. Genevieve, Berthierville, Chambly, Quebec). [1st marriage of Cuthbert GRANT Sr.’s daughter? born 1789? Or, 2d marriage, after 1799, of Cuthbert GRANT Sr.’s widow?];
  • and one of them married Francois PERREAULT MORIN;
  • in addition, there was a Marguerite GRANT married to a Baptiste POITRAS.
